The Queensland Academies' Young Scholars Program is providing highly capable school students in Years 5 to 9 with challenging enrichment opportunities.
The rationale for this initiative is to develop the Queensland Academies Young Scholars Program as a teaching and learning strategy for gifted/highly capable year five to nine students within mainstream schools. The program is delivered at all three Academies in Brisbane and the Gold Coast and includes participation by our programming partners including the Queensland Writers Centre, the Gold Coast City Gallery, the University of Queensland , the Queensland University of Technology and Griffith University.

Kids' S.T.E.M. Convention
Inspiration, Investigation and Celebration - the Kids' S.T.E.M. Convention is an innovative and successful learning initiative designed for the benefit of Middle Phase students in Years 6 to 9. This ground-breaking initiative commenced in 2007 and is a successful annual event for Middle Phase students in State Primary and High Schools. The Convention targets students who seek out new challenges in their learning in the Science, Technology, and Engineering and Mathematics. Students set their own learning goals, desire to be independent in the learning context, question existing theories, and knowledge, and are confident to share their research findings.
The S.T.E.M. program consists of three phases:
A full day conference experience conducted at the University of Queensland St Lucia campus (Friday, 13 July 2012). Student delegates will be inspired by a key note address delivered by a prominent figure from the scientific community; led through the steps required to conduct rigorous scientific inquiry and participate in two self selected 'hands-on' small group workshops. Our conference day is fully catered and incurs a cost of $35 per student.
In the 8 week period following the conference, students are required to undertake either an individual or group investigation. Students will be assisted through this process via mentoring at the school level. Schools will be supported via access to S.T.E.M. Committee assistance and access to scientific community expertise.
Students display and share their investigations with the wider community via an afternoon forum conducted at the Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology (Toowong). Investigations are judged by academics and professionals working within the S.T.E.M. disciplines. Trophies are awarded to winning investigations across a number of categories.
