Three specialist state high schools for Queensland's high performers

The Queensland Academies are state schools for highly capable Year 10 to 12 students.

A bridge between high school and tertiary study, the academies are designed to maximise the potential of bright students and prepare them for university.

History of the Queensland Academies

The exciting benefits of attending the Queensland Academies include:

Studying with like-minded students

By challenging current approaches to teaching and learning, the academies enable students to learn from and with each other. The academies, and the International Baccalaureate curriculum, promote a sense of team in which students aren’t competing for a finite number of top scores.

Internationally recognised curriculum

The Queensland Academies offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program – an internationally recognised pre-university level qualification that allows subjects to be accelerated and graduating students to study at Australian tertiary institutes as well as overseas universities.

Preparation for university

The rigour of the IB curriculum with subjects such as an introduction to the philosophy of knowledge (TOK) and the Extended Essay (on a research topic of the student’s choosing), coupled with the style of education – teachers upload notes for lessons that take the form of lectures, workshops, tutorials, or one-on-ones – enables students to adjust more readily to university conditions.

Partnerships with universities

Partnerships with leading universities afford benefits including credit into second-year university courses, attainment of additional tertiary rankings, industry experience, involvement with university staff and access to world-class resources and facilities.

Technology-rich environment

The new university-standard facilities at the academies have full wireless connectivity which allows students to use laptops, instead of traditional exercise books, for all subjects.

Stimulating, challenging environment

Bright students are stimulated with challenging extension and enhancement opportunities run with partner universities. They take part in camps, formals, sports and music events and are challenged by an array of school-based extracurricular (CAS) activities.
